Mark, Good info. I'll bet there are a lot people like me who have the wrong ideas about spreading leaches. A blog here could help dispel those beliefs.

Thanks,

Ted

Ted,

Actually leeches are still widely used around the US - especially in the northern midwest. My folks sell a lot of leeches wholesale to bait stores in Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, etc. I've been doing some internet research to see if we can open up a more profitable market by selling direct ship to fishermen and women via the internet..

If you're going from the US into Canda, you're not allowed to take leeches anymore - perhaps the ban you've heard of. And its nearly impossible to populate leeches into other lakes that have fish in them. We've had many a good leech pond ruined because of someone throwing a couple sunfish, or bullheads into the pond. If fish exist in the body of water, they will eat the leeches.
I'll consider starting a blog on here to communicate the many uses!

Best,

Mark

Thanks, and no I don't get to Lake Michigan. I do however fish Lake Erie a couple three times a year while in PA on business. If you get to South West Florida, look me up I'll take you out.

That's great Emm. Hope you out catch the boyfriend all summer. And by the way, Walleye are more likely to hit a moving bait even if it is a worm. Their mouths are not built for bottom feeding.

NOAA Proposes Rule to Require Saltwater Angler Registration

NOAA’s Fisheries Service is seeking comment on a proposed rule that requires anglers and spearfishers who fish recreationally in federal ocean waters to be registered before fishing in 2009.

The rule would also require registration by those who may catch anadromous species anywhere, including striped bass, salmon and shad that spawn in rivers and streams and spend their adult lives in estuaries and the ocean.

The proposed rule satisfies the National Academy of Science National Research Council… Continue
